The power that literacy holds in changing the lives of millions of people is undeniable. It improves lives by expanding capabilities which in turn, help reduce poverty.
While there has been great progress made in literacy in recent decades, there’s still a lot more to be done.
Do you know that there’s still at least 763 million adults worldwide that still cannot read nor write? Unfortunately the staggering statistics show that two thirds of them are women, while 250 million children are unable to receive basic literacy skills.
WHY IS LITERACY SO IMPORTANT?
In modern times, illiteracy is seen as a major hindrance towards development and success. The inability to read or write can significantly affect the quality of life of a person. And it doesn’t just cause an issue at the individual level, but higher rates of illiteracy can severely affect the functionality of a nation.
INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY ON 8TH SEPTEMBER
This year’s theme is ‘Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies’.
With widening inequalities being born out of a rapidly changing world, the statistics of vulnerable communities who are still illiterate is worrying.
It’s important to reflect on the vital role of literacy in shaping more inclusive and sustainable societies.
This is a day first conceived with the purpose of reminding the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies - especially those in need.

While literacy is a blessing that we might take for granted, on this day, we want to remind you to use your literacy to encourage and help those who are facing difficulties to read and write. Here are some ways you can play your part in your own way!
Donate books to local schools or libraries

Start a community library at your neighbourhood or workplace
Support an orphaned family to ensure their children get the best education they need
