Caring for Orphans : A Righteous Virtue

While many of us have had the privilege of a childhood without worry, the same can’t be said for many orphaned children around the world.

On top of the world-shattering loss of one or both of their parents, these children also have to deal with the financial and societal difficulties that follow.

Orphans are one of the most vulnerable communities in the world, and without proper care they are susceptible to evils such as child labour, crime, or even trafficking.

Our Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) himself was an orphan, and in his wisdom taught us that helping orphans is one of the biggest virtues in Islam.

Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Myself and the caretaker of an orphan will be in Paradise like this,” and he held his two fingers together. (Source: Sahih Al-Bukhari 5659)

The Prophet (S.A.W.) also taught us that caring for orphans and other vulnerable groups is an essential part of being a Muslim. Islam is built on the principles of kindness, community spirit, and actively working to support all members of society.

As Muslims and as ethical human beings, it is our moral responsibility to do our best to help those in need, especially orphans. If we can’t support them monetarily, we should still make an effort to help in other ways, such as volunteering our time, donating used items to orphanages, or even just spreading the word and raising awareness among our social circles.

Abu Darda reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Seek out the vulnerable among you. Verily, you are only given provision and support due to your support of the weak.” (Source: Sunan at-Tirmizi 1702)

As the Prophet reminds us here, Allah (S.W.T.) rewards those who help the vulnerable with more support and provision. Indeed, Allah (S.W.T.) placed us here on this Earth so that we could earn our way into Jannah. And what better way to do so than by helping orphaned children!

In this holy month of Rabi’ul Awwal, let us honour our beloved Prophet S.A.W. by providing orphaned children with food and education. Let’s all do our part to give these orphans a bright future, and keep them safe from harm!
